I don't know. I made it and I rather like the taste. It may not be for everyone but it's much better than my attempts. This one is actually pretty good... but refrigerate it before you use it. It's much better after it chills.

thurs and sat at the ferry building farmer's market in SF, there's a Korean style Okonomiyaki from Namu. $8 (+$1 w/egg) i wouldn't go out of my way, but if you're in the area it's a decent grab. plus, waaaaay cheaper than the $18 tag they have at their restaurant.

so easy to make, i just make it at home when i get the craving.

There's an izakaya in the Mission called Nombe that sometimes makes okonomiyaki. I like that place, but it's a little expensive and the portions are small. Very tasty, very authentic -- especially if you're going for Shibuya-style high-rise izakaya authenticity in both taste and expense. ^_^

I live in SF as well. I've been to Izumiya in Japantown for their okonomiyaki. Is there any other place in town you'd recommend?

Sweet potato flour works well because it's soft (rather than grainy or chalky) and doesn't require soaking time the way tapioca does. But you can just use okonomiyaki flour (or even all-purpose flour) if you don't care about being gluten-free. I develop most of my recipes to be gluten-free because I feel better eating that way.

Egg replacer would probably work. I never touch the stuff. Soaked flax seeds work just as well as egg whites for binding things together. Tapioca flour can also help here (adds more chewy texture).

Sorry for the delay in replying!

Don't bother with this. It sounds good in theory but once you make it you'll wish you hadn't taken the time.

Hi! I've always loved okonomiyaki! But after turning vegan I was a bit sad when I realised the original recipe uses eggs... but you came up with this amazing recipe! Just a couple of questions:
- Can I not use sweet potato flour?
- Do you have any idea if an "egg replacer" would be useful for a variation of your recipe?

Thank you! Keep up the good work!

OMG!! Thankyou for this recipe!! This post is a fantastic confluence of topics! My boyfriend and I started the gluten free and paleo diet a few months ago. We have one 'cheating' day a week as we transition, and we were thinking about the forbidden foods we'd want to eat on the next cheat day. We talked about how we wished we could have proper okonomiyake like we'd had in Osaka. So we googled to see if we could find out about any restaurants in Melbourne doing them right and we found your blog AND HERE YOU ARE MAKING A PALEO RECIPE FOR OKONOMIYAKE! We will not even have to wait till cheat day! Yay internet!

[...] Lately, though, I’ve been doing a very-low-carb paleo diet. I won’t go into exactly what the Paleo diet is, (you can read lots on ThePaleoDiet.com and on MarksDailyApple.com), except that you don’t eat any grains or seeds. That’s rice, wheat, quinoa, and lots of other things totally out. I can’t even make my usual gluten-free okonomiyaki! [...]
