an ode to okonomiyaki, the Japanese savory pancake

Okonomiyaki Truck Spotted in Los Angeles!

This article made me mad. Why don’t we have an okonomiyaki truck in San Francisco? Why is it so hard to even FIND okonomiyaki in San Francisco?!

I wonder how an okonomiyaki truck would do in San Francisco. Perhaps it would advertise as “the bacon pancake” truck, and specialize in okonomiyaki with bacon and egg.

Now I think I should start an okonomiyaki cart!

This article also gets the distinctions between the different styles of okonomiyaki wrong. “Hiroshima style” doesn’t necessarily include noodles, and usually doesn’t. It’s MODAAN style that’s all about adding extra carbs (noodles)!

I live in SF as well. I’ve been to Izumiya in Japantown for their okonomiyaki. Is there any other place in town you’d recommend?

There’s an izakaya in the Mission called Nombe that sometimes makes okonomiyaki. I like that place, but it’s a little expensive and the portions are small. Very tasty, very authentic — especially if you’re going for Shibuya-style high-rise izakaya authenticity in both taste and expense. ^_^

thurs and sat at the ferry building farmer’s market in SF, there’s a Korean style Okonomiyaki from Namu. $8 (+$1 w/egg) i wouldn’t go out of my way, but if you’re in the area it’s a decent grab. plus, waaaaay cheaper than the $18 tag they have at their restaurant.

so easy to make, i just make it at home when i get the craving.
